Rescue, Resistance and Liberation
Acts of courage and defiance
Any form of resistance against the all-powerful Nazi regime was dangerous and reprisals were ruthless. Initially Jews continued to practice their religious and cultural traditions and maintain community structures in defiance of the rules and prevailing conditions. When it became clear that death could not be avoided, acts of courageous resistance took many forms.
Despite the dangers there were also individuals and groups who were not Jewish who courageously opposed Nazi policies. Members of resistance movements came from diverse backgrounds and religions.
