Liberation

The pain of survival
Between July 1944 and May 1945 the British, American and Russian forces entered the concentration camps. The survivors were liberated and the world learnt of the unspeakable horrors of the Nazi atrocities. Survivors were faced with the pain of survival – their homes, families and communities had all been destroyed. Displaced Persons camps were set up in Germany, Austria and Italy. Many stayed in these camps for a few years after liberation before finding refuge in countries such as America, Australia, South Africa and Israel, or wherever else they could find a home and rebuild their lives.
