The Third Reich

Nazism engulfs the Jews of Europe

Nazi persecution spreads
By the time Germany invaded Poland in September 1939, Germany was already in control of the Saarland, Rhinelands, Austria and much of Czechoslovakia and Memel in Lithuania.

As the Reich's borders expanded, more and more Jews were engulfed by Nazi rule. Jews in the conquered territories became victims of Nazi persecution and were subjected to oppressive restrictions and brutality. All Jews had to wear a distinguishing badge, such as a yellow star to identify them as Jews.
