Deportation and Death Camps
Who shall live ... who shall die
The selection process
Auschwitz-Birkenau and Majdanek operated as slave-labour camps as well as killing centres. On arrival, deportees were immediately subjected to a selection process. SS doctors and officers decided who would be put to death immediately and who would be used for slave labour. Almost everyone under the age of sixteen, pregnant women, young children and the infirm were selected for immediate death.
