Cape Town Holocaust Centre marks United Nations Holocaust Memorial Day.

Holocaust survivor Shmuel Keren lights a candle in a spirit of remembrance and hope, to mark the fourth United Nations International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust. This memorial day (commemorated each year on the 27th of January, the anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz) is aimed at remembering the victims of the Holocaust, and examining the dangers of antisemitism and other forms of prejudice as well as promoting a commitment to Holocaust education by the member states of the United Nations.

Cape Town Holocaust Centre Director Richard Freedman introduces Ms Ruta Puisyte (deputy director of the Vilnius Yiddish Institute at the Vilnius University) to Patron Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela and German Consul-General Jörg-Werner Marquardt.

Delivering a lecture entitled “The Holocaust in Lithuania” at the memorial event she spoke compellingly of Lithuania’s role in the persecution of Jews, and her experience of studying the Holocaust in Lithuania. She explored the denial by her fellow Lithuanians of persecution of the country’s Jewish citizens, and their unwillingness to examine their own history. She also examined the impact of the period in Lithuania prior to the fall of the Soviet Union in 1989.
